Considering major changes to your bedroom? There are a few basic principles worth bearing in mind before you get started. Let’s take a look at some of the more important ones.
Choose a Calming Colour Palette
Your bedroom should be a space in which it’s easy to relax and unwind. Consequently, opting for muted, soothing colours is often sensible. Neutral off-white shades, and variations on green, blue, grey, and brown will often work. As a general principle, if a given colour is found in nature, then it stands a good chance of working – which, for most people, rules out not only bold, saturated primary colours, but also pure brilliant white.
It’s worth noting that general principles can be abandoned if your personal preference contradicts them. If you really want to paint the room bright yellow, it might just be that you’ll get a better night’s sleep having done so!
Upgrade Your Lighting
Of course, you’ll be spending much of your time in your bedroom at night – which might make the way you light the space a very important consideration. Look for low levels of warm light, so that you can effectively unwind late into the evening. You might also consider smart bulbs, which can adjust their brightness and colour temperature according to a pre-defined schedule.
Your lighting should ideally come from many different sources. This will help the space to feel expansive, and eliminate stark shadows. For example, you might install gooseneck-style lamps on either side of the bed, which will make it easy to see what you’re reading in the hour or so before you go to sleep.
Incorporate Fitted Wardrobes for Optimal Storage
A clutter-free bedroom tends to be a bedroom that promotes health and well-being. As such, it’s often a good idea to install fitted, bespoke wardrobes and other items of storage furniture. These will often look the part, extending from floor to ceiling and filling all of the available space. They will provide a powerful means of stashing away those items you don’t want to keep visible – as well as enhancing the value of the property.
Refresh with Textiles and Accessories
The soft furnishings in your bedroom, including curtains, rugs, throws and bedding, will often take up a significant portion of the space. As such, making changes here can radically alter the overall look of the room. You might, for example, consider accenting your bed with a few new throws and cushions.
Invest in a Statement Bed
Of course, the most important item of furniture in any bedroom is the bed itself. Investing in the right mattress can help you to get a good night’s sleep – but a statement bed frame, or a particular kind of headboard, might have a greater visual impact.
